About Us

The Pre-School at Biggin Hill Primary School, image 1

At Biggin Hill Primary School, we are incredibly proud of our thriving Pre-School which offers a nurturing, friendly and stimulating environment for children from the term in which they turn 2, to rising 5 year olds. Our Pre-School aims to help shape children into creative and enquiring individuals, building on their natural enthusiasm and curiosity, preparing them for the beginning of their educational journey.

We offer a continuous provision of fun, learning activities through the use of multi-sensory resources and, most importantly, caring, committed and experienced practitioners. As well as a weekly Forest School session where the children are able to explore the outdoors and get messy, we provide PE sessions with the fantastic Sporty Stars which is supported by our Pre-School staff. We explore opportunities to work with our school community and join in with key school events.

Our Setting

Our Pre-School is situated within the key stage one building. We have both indoor and outdoor space which promotes independent learning and provides opportunities for the development across the seven areas of learning.

Our outdoor space includes a construction area, sand pit and water tray, mud kitchen, covered outdoor learning area and opportunities to refine fine and gross motor skills through the use of bicycles, climbing and play equipment.

Indoors, children have access to various areas including small word, messy play, literacy and numeracy, a role play area, topic and themed activities as well as the use of an interactive whiteboard to promote IT skills.

As our outdoor and indoor areas are linked, the children are able to access these equally through free-flow play and learning.

Our Curriculum

Our Pre-School follows the curriculum as outlined in the Sept 2021 statutory framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

The EYFS framework includes 7 areas of learning and development that are equally important and inter-connected. However, 3 areas known as the prime areas are seen as particularly important for igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building children’s capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Prime Areas

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

We also use The Characteristics of Effective Learning to help our children become effective and independent learners. We use these in focussed, independent and guided tasks. They are:

Playing and Exploring -

Engagement: Finding out and exploring, Playing with that they know, Being willing to ‘have a go’.

Active Learning -

Motivation:Being involved and concentrating, Keep trying, Enjoying achieving what they set out to do.

Creating and Thinking Critically -

Thinking: Having their own ideas, Making links, Choosing ways to do things.

Recording Learning

Regular and positive communication, plus a commitment to working together, means that we are able to provide consistency between home and school, leading to better outcomes for your child. Learning and development is recorded in a Learning Journey Folder and via an online platform ‘Tapestry’. Parents and carers can view their child's observations and learning journey through the Tapestry app and are encouraged to add their observations to the diary to help inform the Pre-School of learning and development taking place at home.

This year, our Pre-School class is called Big Ben class
