Y5 Abi Elphinstone Class

Our literacy work this half-term will be based around The Lost Thing, in which a man hunting for bottle caps on the beach finds a mysterious ‘lost thing’ and has to figure out where he belongs. We will be learning to carefully consider our vocabulary choices, to use a range of modal verbs for possibility and will be beginning to use the subjunctive form in our work.

In maths we will be focusing on our place value knowledge. We will be working on our understanding of the value of the different digits in a number up to millions, and beginning to develop an understanding of decimals and negative numbers.

In humanities our big question is ‘What’s so special about the USA?’. We are going to be learning about the different states that make up the USA, and developing an understanding of how America was discovered. We will learn about the Native Americans, as well as learning about why New York City is an attraction to tourists.

In science our big question is ‘Will we ever send another person to the moon?’. We will be learning the names of all the planets in our solar system, the order that they go in andthe sizes and distances between each one. We will also be building knowledge about how the sun, Earth and moon move, learning key words such as ‘orbit’ and ‘rotate’.
